# Why we chose fully deterministic robot programs

Updated at: 14 October 2026

We run large robots at full speed, where a single stop can be very costly. That is why our robot programs contain no AI, and why our vision system does.

## The cost of one stop

Our robots work in production that demands reliability and robustness, often shift after shift. One error, such as a crash or simply a stop, can be very costly. When we chose how robot programs should be created, that was the starting point.

Using AI to create robot programs risks making it take longer to create a new program, and it adds risk. So we have chosen not to use AI for the robot programs or the robot's movements.

## Deterministic, and still fast

With our patented method for creating robot programs, the Dynamic Program Generator, we solve what others try to solve with physical AI, in a fully deterministic way. The cell, its I/O, error handling and logic are set up once at integration. After that, the operator describes the flow for a new part, and the program is created in 1–3 minutes, without robot skills and with no training data. The program gives the same result every time.

Here an operator with no robot experience creates a program for a completely new product in 1 minute 17 seconds:

## The same choice for packing

We tested AI for 3D Tetris optimisation of mixed pallets. It turned out to be too sensitive to the training data. So we built a fully deterministic 3D Tetris solution that builds compact pallets or boxes, with no AI and no training. On pallets, fill rates go up to the high 90s %.

## Where AI does the work

Seeing is a different task. We use AI in some vision applications, with our own vision system that does not need massive training. Goods2Robot is one example. Goods are fed to the robot, which picks and packs them per customer order. AI vision helps the robot see the products, while the packing itself is done by the deterministic 3D Tetris.

## What it means on the floor

For production, the result is a robot that behaves the same way each time it runs a program. A new part does not wait for data to be collected. It needs 1–3 minutes of an operator's time while the machine keeps producing. And every part is logged, with statistics and traceability.

If you are thinking about where AI belongs in your own automation, we would be glad to hear how you see it and share what we have learned. [Contact us](https://www.opiflex.se/en/contact/).
